Mediation

Less conflict. More control.

family wearing brain hats

Not every family law case needs to be decided in a courtroom. Mediation offers families a way to resolve disputes more quickly, privately, and often at a lower cost than litigation. It gives both parties more control over the outcome — instead of leaving decisions to a judge.

At the Law Office of Jennifer L. King, PC, we offer mediation services as neutrals, provide representation during mediation, or consult behind the scenes — depending on what best serves your needs.

When Mediation Works Well

Mediation is often effective when:

  • Both parties are willing to negotiate in good faith.
  • There is a focus on co-parenting and preserving relationships.
  • The parties want more privacy and flexibility than court provides.
  • The goal is to save time and costs compared to litigation.

When Mediation May Not Be Appropriate

Mediation has limits. It may not be suitable in situations involving:

  • Domestic violence or coercive control (where one party feels unsafe).
  • A spouse hiding assets or refusing full financial disclosure.
  • Severe power imbalances that make fair negotiation impossible.

Benefits of Mediation

  • Lower Cost: Typically less expensive than litigation.
  • Faster Resolution: Cases often resolve in weeks or months instead of years.
  • Confidential: Mediation is private, unlike court proceedings.
  • Greater Control: You and your spouse craft the agreement, not the judge.
  • Reduced Stress: Less adversarial and more cooperative than court.

Our Mediation Services

Full-Service Mediation (Unrepresented Parties)
As a neutral mediator, we help both parties work through disputes fairly and respectfully — without unnecessary legal fees.

Mediation for Represented Parties
We act as a mediator when both spouses already have attorneys, helping clients and counsel resolve disputes efficiently.

Representation at Mediation
We can represent you while you participate in mediation with another mediator — protecting your rights, explaining your options in real time, and ensuring the final agreement is sound.

Consultation During Mediation
If you choose to mediate without an attorney present, we can consult with you behind the scenes — reviewing proposed agreements, answering questions, and ensuring you fully understand your rights.

How the Mediation Process Works

  1. Initial Meeting: The mediator explains the process and ground rules.
  2. Information Gathering: Each party shares financial documents, parenting proposals, or other relevant information.
  3. Negotiation Sessions: Guided discussions to work through custody, support, and property division.
  4. Agreement Drafted: Once terms are reached, a written agreement is prepared.
  5. Court Approval: The agreement is submitted to the court and, once approved, becomes a binding order.
